Lash shed: everything you need to know as an eyelash stylist about eyelash loss
Many people don't realize it, but it happens twice a year: a major eyelash loss, also known as 'lash shed'. Just like the hair on our head, our eyelashes also have a natural cycle.
What is lash shed?
Lash shed is the term used to describe when you lose more eyelashes than normal, often in the fall and spring. This is similar to seasonal hair loss, which is common for many people. During these times, hormonal changes, temperature changes, and even changes in sunlight exposure can contribute to increased eyelash shedding.
How does the eyelash cycle work?
We'll tell you more about what lash shed means for you as an eyelash stylist, but first it's useful to know how the natural cycle of eyelash growth works.
Each eyelash has its own eyelash cycle and it consists of three phases:
1.
Anagen phase (growth phase):
This is the active growth phase of the eyelash. Most eyelashes stay in this phase for about 30 to 45 days.
2.
Catagen phase (transition phase):
In this phase the eyelash stops growing and prepares for the resting phase. This usually lasts a few weeks.
3.
Telogen phase (resting phase)
This is the last phase where the eyelash is still attached to the eyelash follicle but no longer grows. After this phase the eyelash falls out, making room for a new eyelash to grow.
On average, people lose 1 to 5 lashes per day, and that is very normal, but during a lash shed this number can increase significantly. A big nightmare of course when new lashes have just been placed, because your own lashes with extensions can fall out.
That is why it is important to advise your customer about this.
Why does lash shed happen twice a year?
The exact cause of lash shed is not fully understood, but there are some theories that may explain why lash shed occurs mainly in spring and fall:
Change in humidity and temperature
the transition from warm to cold weather (and vice versa) can affect the skin and hair follicles, which can also lead to increased hair and eyelash loss.
Hormonal fluctuations
Hormonal changes influenced by seasons can also affect the growth cycle of your lashes, causing them to reach the telogen phase and fall out more quickly.
Seasonal changes
just as some animals shed their coats with the seasons, our hair follicles (and therefore eyelash follicles) respond to changes in weather and daylight. These fluctuations can cause eyelashes to fall out sooner.
Your job as a lash stylist: inform your client about lash shed
and recommend the right products
As an eyelash stylist you want satisfied customers and that is why it is important to inform your customers well. This way you are always realistic and honest and the customer knows what to expect. So tell them that the loss of eyelashes can be caused by lash shed. If necessary, advise them to come back sooner for a refill treatment.
Also emphasize the importance of good aftercare and hygiene. The cleaner the lashes, the better the retention. Therefore, advise your client to use a lash shampoo, like the Oh My Lash bubble foam. You can also eyelash serum advise that is also suitable when wearing eyelash extensions.
