Applying eyelash extensions
Applying eyelash extensions: everything you need to know!
Eyelash extensions are a great way to create a fuller, longer and more expressive look. Applying eyelash extensions professionally requires precision, knowledge and the right techniques. In this blog we will take you step by step through the process of placing eyelash extensions, from preparation to aftercare.
The preparation when it comes to applying eyelash extensions: a good start is half the battle
For optimal adhesion of eyelash extensions it is important that the client comes to the salon without make-up. This way there are no residues of mascara, eyeliner or eye shadow that can affect the adhesion when you apply eyelash extensions.
1.
Interview
An enthusiastic client in the salon who wants to have eyelash extensions placed? Always start with an intake interview. Discuss the client's wishes and ask questions about possible allergies and contraindications. Then have the client fill out and sign an intake form.
2.
Hygiene and preparation
Make sure your own hair is tied up and ask the client to do the same. A hairnet can help keep loose hairs out of the way. Make sure the salon is clean and tidy before you begin.
3.
Masking the lower lashes
Have the client look up and tape the lower lashes. This prevents the eyelash extensions from accidentally sticking to the lower lashes. Make sure the tape just below the eyelid (water line) to prevent irritation.
4.
Degrease eyelashes and prepare glue
Degrease the natural lashes with a lash cleaner and make sure they are completely dry before continuing. This can be done using a air pump. Shake the eyelash glue by hand for at least 60 seconds and place a drop on the glue stone. Replace the glue after each client and more often in high humidity (above 70%).
Applying eyelash extensions? Determine the curl, length and thickness
Every client has unique lashes and needs. The right choice of length, curl and thickness is essential for a natural and comfortable look.
- Width:: start with shorter lashes on the inner corner of the eye (6-7mm) and gradually build up to the longest length in the middle of the eye. Then reduce the length slightly for a natural look.
- Thickness: for a natural look, 0.15 mm is usually used. For a mascara effect, 0.20 mm can be a good option, but be careful that it is not too heavy for the natural lashes.
- Glasses wearers: pay attention to the distance to the lenses so that the extensions do not touch the glasses.
Here's how to apply eyelash extensions. Get started!
1.
Isolating the natural eyelash
Use a curved isolation pliers to isolate one eyelash hair. Take an extension from the strip with a straight tweezer and pull it a quarter through the glue.
2.
Placement of the eyelash extensions
Work symmetrically: Alternately place extensions on the right and left eyes to maintain evenness.
Keep a distance of approximately 0,5 mm from the lash line to avoid irritation.
Extensions can be attached to the bottom, sides or top of the natural lash depending on the desired direction.
Pay attention to growth phases. Lashes in the anagen (growth phase) are usually not glued, because they are not yet strong enough to carry the eyelash extensions.
3.
Finishing and checking
- Apply the super bonder, this ensures that the glue is worked out faster and the customer is less bothered by the fumes, by the way this increases the retention by 30%.
- Check that no lashes are stuck together and carefully separate them if necessary.
- Carefully remove the tape and have the client slowly open their eyes.
- Give the customer a mirror to admire the result.
Why is it important that eyelashes don't stick together?
Eyelashes that are stuck together can cause several problems:
- The number of eyelash extensions placed is halved, resulting in a less full set.
- Eyelashes in different growth stages pull on each other, which can cause damage.
- Incorrectly placed extensions can cause irritation and itching.
Conclusion about applying eyelash extensions
Applying eyelash extensions is precision work that must be done with care and attention. By preparing well, using the right techniques and checking thoroughly afterwards, you will ensure a beautiful, full set of eyelash extensions that your client will be happy with.
